About Us - Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery
History of Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery
A physician-driven initiative to establish a Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery was spearheaded by Dr. Michael Maddaus and Dr. Sayeed Ikramuddin. With extensive experience in the field and a commitment to all aspects of this growing specialty, their vision became a reality in April 2003.
Through support from then Department of Surgery Chair David Dunn, MD, PhD; University of Minnesota Medical Center; University of Minnesota Physicians; and generous financial investments from industry partners, the University of Minnesota Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery has established itself as a premier facility.
Minimally invasive surgery has grown in popularity for many clear reasons, but only a few institutions have the infrastructure and expertise to push the envelope, to explore new and remarkable techniques for minimally invasive surgery, and to teach others how to best use those techniques. Thanks to its rich history, strong leadership, outstanding facilities, and generous support from key benefactors, the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery has a unique opportunity to shape the future of this growing specialty.
