Clinic Overview

One in four women over age 35 in the United States suffers from uterine fibroids, non cancerous growths that can cause heavy bleeding, frequent urination and pelvic pain. Symptoms can be so severe that a woman’s quality of life can be greatly diminished.

The Fibroid Clinic at University of Minnesota Medical Center can help. With this innovative program within the Women’s Health Center, you see both an interventional radiologist and an obstetrician/gynecologist during your one appointment so that you can understand both your surgical and nonsurgical options.

You no longer have to live in pain…you have options. We want you to feel better so you can get back to your life.

  • Medical management with drug therapy - hormone medications reduce bleeding and decrease fibroid tumor size
  • GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) therapy - reduces the production of estrogens and causes the shrinkage of the fibroid
  • Total or subtotal hysterectomy - removal of the uterus and possibly ovaries
  • Endometrial ablation - removal of the uterus lining to reduce bleeding
  • Myomectomy - removal of the uterine fibroids
  • Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) - non-surgical procedure to block blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink
