Clinic Overview

Adoption unites parents and children to become a family. Questions often come up at all stages of the adoption process, from before the referral to years later after the adoption was completed. The Adoption Medicine Clinic at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital is internationally recognized, comprehensive care using a team approach to ensuring better mental and physical health for children who are adopted or in foster care.

We can guide you toward services and medical specialties to support you and your child. We offer comprehensive, coordinated care and can help to facilitate local, national or international visits for full assessments. The Adoption Medicine Clinic provides services including, but not limited to:

• Medical care for children who are adopted and have unique medical needs, and coordination of care in partnership with your child’s primary care provider and specialists
• Consultations and help in building and strengthening the parent-child relationship during the initial adjustment period
• Support to newly arrived children in developing their emotional regulation skills within the context of their relationship with their parent
• Ongoing monitoring of the developmental trajectory for children up to age 5 to help them prepare for school
• Additional mental health, learning and medical health consultations for school age children, specifically regarding issues within the parent-child relationship and emotion regulation, to help families to develop a comprehensive intervention plan

Since 1986, the Adoption Medicine Clinic at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital has reviewed pre-adoption medical records for more than 20,000 children from more than 30 countries. Come see us for a consultation before you adopt for help in understanding the medical needs that you may encounter and decipher the lengthy medical checklist. Once a child has been referred to you, we can review the medical records to provide information on various medical conditions, country-specific medical concerns and possible issues to consider as you continue with your adoption process.
