Kidney Stone Program

Clinic Overview

Providing multidisciplinary care to treat
and prevent recurrence of kidney stones

Kidney stones, one of the most painful urologic disorders, are also one of the most common. It is estimated that one in 10 Americans will have at least one kidney stone within their lifetime. And without preventative measures, there is a 50 percent chance of kidney stone recurrence within five years.

At the Kidney Stone Program at University of Minnesota Medical Center, we offer innovative and complete care for patients with acute or chronic kidney stones. Our multidisciplinary care teams are dedicated to the accurate diagnosis, management and prevention of kidney stones. The program takes a comprehensive approach not only in treating patients with stones, but also in helping patients prevent recurrence. The Kidney Stone Program is housed within the Urology Clinic at University of Minnesota Medical Center.

While we provide the latest in surgical laser technology to break up stones, the comprehensive Kidney Stone Program emphasizes prevention by conducting a detailed metabolic evaluation, offering dietary counseling and, if needed, using medication.

  • Comprehensive metabolic evaluation
  • Coordinated care in the treatment of kidney stones
  • Innovative minimally invasive surgery
  • Patient-centered dietary counseling
  • Team approach to treatment and prevention
