About Us

University of Minnesota Physicians is a premier physician organization dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-focused care in more than 100 specialty and subspecialty areas. Although our organization is relatively new (founded in 1997), a long tradition of world-class academic medicine has been a mainstay for the physicians at the University of Minnesota Medical School since 1888. Today we have the widest range of specialists available in the Twin Cities metropolitan area with more than 750 physicians and 1,400 health professionals. We provide quality, coordinated care for our patients, and pride ourselves on our interdisciplinary practice model.

As an independent, not-for-profit organization governed by a board of directors, University of Minnesota Physicians serves as the integrated group practice of the University of Minnesota Medical School faculty. Committed to its mission to advance medical knowledge and education, University of Minnesota Physicians also contributes substantially to fund the research and education mission of the Medical School.

History

In 1997, nearly 20 practice groups at the University of Minnesota combined to form University of Minnesota Physicians. Thereafter we achieved considerable growth and implemented continual improvements to our clinical and business operations, ultimately enhancing our commitment to academic medicine.

In 2003, University of Minnesota Physicians assumed management of the ambulatory clinics at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview and formed a partnership with Fairview to coordinate responsibilities, cultures, and an environment for patient-focused care.

Today University of Minnesota Physicians draws on the strengths of the University of Minnesota, Fairview and other health care community partners to combine innovative academic medicine with world-class community health care. The result is an exemplary interdisciplinary care model that provides remarkable depth and breadth of specialty expertise to patients in the Twin Cities, Midwest and beyond.
