Research conducted by University of Minnesota/University of Minnesota Physicians scientists collaborating with colleagues at Stanford University was cited by Time magazine as one of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs for 2010.
Dr. Christopher De Jonge and Dr. Nancy Bossert, of the University of Minnesota Physicians Reproductive Medicine Center, were part of a team of scientists that used sophisticated time-lapse video micrography to establish that human embryos achieving certain time-dependent developmental changes in conjunction with specific patterns of gene expression have the greatest likelihood to develop to the blastocyst stage.
The application of this new technology shows great promise in human in vitro fertilization; providing the ability to select and transfer the most developmentally competent embryos and achieve successful singleton pregnancies.
They published their findings in the journal Nature Biotechnology.
