World-renowned care is worth a little extra time and planning

Some construction projects (including that of the Central Corridor Light Rail) have affected travel to and around the University. Please use our recommended routes, and incorporate a minimum of 30 minutes extra into your travel plan. We encourage you to check this section before coming to the University campus as we will be updating it regularly.

Note: Temporary ramp closure 
The exit ramp off I-94E to Huron Blvd. will be closed Monday and Tuesday (Dec. 12 and 13). According to MnDot, the ramp will be open by 6 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 14). The detour: Continue on I-94E and use the Cretin Avenue/Vandalia Street interchange to access westbound I-94 and then Huron Blvd. For more MnDot project information, visit www.mndot.gov

Recommended Routes

East Bank

The best way to access our East Bank specialty clinics and University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview is via I-94 and the Huron exit.  (UMP - Image - PDF Icon Dual bank map /directions; UMP - Image - PDF Icon East Bank map/directions.)  We recommend you valet or park in the Patient/Visitor Ramp and take the tunnel to your clinic.  (UMP - Image - PDF Icon Clinic access (tunnel) map

West Bank

The best route for reaching our West Bank specialty clinics and University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital is via I-94 and the Riverside Ave./25th Ave. exit. (UMP - Image - PDF Icon Dual bank map /directions; West Bank map/directions.)

 

Bank to Bank

If you need to travel from the East Bank to the West Bank or vice versa, use this Bank-to-Bank map for the best route.
 


Busing

Metro Transit bus stops have changed on East Bank and West Bank. For full information on new locations and route detours, visit metrotransit.org/construction or call the Transit Information Center at 612-373-3333.

Project Information

Washington Avenue Bridge Lane Reduction

Now – November 2012
The Washington Ave. Bridge has been reduced to one lane in each direction. Patients and visitors are advised to avoid the bridge, and reach the East Bank via Huron off I-94. Major construction on the bridge is expected to end in November 2012, but the lane reduction is permanent.

Washington Avenue Closure and Construction

Now – August 2012
Washington Avenue, between Pleasant and Oak Streets, is closed (this includes intersections at Union and Walnut streets). Patients/visitors are advised to avoid this area and reach the East Bank via Huron off I-94. When construction is complete in August 2012, Washington Avenue between Church and Walnut will become the Washington Avenue Transit Mall, a pedestrian/transit mall.

 

About The Light Rail
The light rail will travel through the U of M campus along Washington Ave, connecting the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Service is expected to begin in 2014.
