U of M BMT expert joins Institute of Medicine

University blood and marrow transplant expert Bruce Blazar, M.D., was elected to the Institute of Medicine for his work in clinical and translational science. 

The election, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizes experts who demonstrate outstanding professional achievement.

Blazar, a Regents Professor in the Medical School and a Masonic Cancer Center member, is also an associate vice president of the Academic Health Center and director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University.

U cancer researcher recognized for game-changing work

Masonic Cancer Center researcher David Largaespada, Ph.D., was awarded the prestigious American Cancer Society (ACS) Research Professor Award in recognition of his influential contributions to cancer research. 

Largaespada led the development of a unique way to identify and understand cancer genes using a tool called Sleeping Beauty, which spots cancer genes hiding inside cells in the body. With that knowledge, researchers can learn how cancers spread and how the cells are being affected by drugs and other treatments.
