What is stomach cancer? Also known as gastric cancer, it begins in tissues lining the stomach.

How often does it occur? Stomach cancer is uncommon in the United States, and the American Cancer Society estimates only 21,000 diagnoses annually.

Are there different types of stomach cancer? Stomach cancer is classified according to the tissue in which it originates. The most common type is adenocarcinoma, which develops in the mucus-producing cells that line the inside of the stomach. Other cancers that can be found in the stomach include:

  • lymphomas
  • gastric sarcomas
  • carcinoid tumors
