Patient Billing Statements Online
With eStatements, you can view your billing statement online through our secure bill pay portal: www.umphyscians.org/billpay. eStatements are an electronic version of the paper statement. You can view your eStatement online, and print it or save it to their computer. In addition to being environmentally friendly, eStatements offer you convenient access to billing statements, efficient, safe and secure payment processing and online payment history for up to 12-months.

UMPhysicians employs a staff of highly trained financial counselors that provide assistance to patients with questions about cost and coverage, or have insufficient or no insurance coverage (self pay) to pay for their care. Pay by mail
A couple weeks after your appointment you should receive a bill in the mail with instructions for how to send in payment. Please note that if you provide a check as payment, you authorize University of Minnesota Physicians to either use information from your check to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account, or to process the payment as a check transaction. Receiving Multiple Bills
At University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, where most of the clinics where we practice are located, most clinics are owned by Fairview, but staffed and managed by UMPhysicians. In most cases, you will get two bills, one for facilities, nursing and equipment from Fairview, and one for the professional services provided by your doctor and medical team from UMPhysicians. Split Billing: Typical insurance coverage for a routine or well-physical exam
Many services are *typically included in a well-physical exam (see list below). During your exam, your provider may identify conditions requiring further evaluation or management (stomach upsets, cough, warts, moles, etc.). Services to care for these, if provided at the same visit, may incur charges for a separate office visit, co-pay, etc. (“split billing”). These charges may be applied toward your deductible by your insurance company. For more information, talk with your insurance company about split billing before your appointment. They can tell you what your plan specifically covers as part of a well-exam.
*Services usually covered as part of a well-exam:
- Complete medical history
- Physical exam, including pelvic exam for women
- Medication review and prescription renewal
- Allergies/adverse drug reactions review
- Immunizations review
- Weight, height, blood pressure and pulse
- General wellness counseling
- Tobacco and alcohol screenings, discussion
- Weight control and exercise counseling
Estimating your out-of-pocket costs
Most insurance carriers classify clinic services that are provided in a hospital-owned facility as “outpatient hospital visits”. Depending on your health insurance benefits plan, this may result in increased out-of-pocket costs, either through an increased co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible amount. To find out more about potential out-of-pocket costs:
- Call the phone number on the back of your insurance card and ask a customer service representative about the cost difference to you between physician services in an outpatient hospital and those in a physician office. You can also ask them to compare past out-of-pocket costs to your current situation.
- Check the certificate of coverage in your benefit plan summary for your coverage of physician services in an outpatient hospital setting.
- Procedures done in hospital-based clinics could be more expensive than in a free standing clinic, so before you agree to a suggested procedure, you have the right to request the charges for that procedure, or to speak to a financial counselor.
- Certain specialty areas have complex situations for insurance coverage (Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, where some situations will be considered medically necessary and some cosmetic) and it is extremely difficult to let patients know ahead of time if the services will be covered by insurance. Insurance Plan Information
HMO's and PPO's
HMO and PPO patients are expected to obtain a referral for the visit (if required by your plan) and to pay the co-payment specified by the plan at the time of service. Please familiarize yourself with your specific coverage to understand your payment obligation. Contact your insurance company to determine your plan's specific requirements and coverage options.
Medicare patients are not required to make payment at the time of service. Any deductible or patient responsibility will be determined after billing Medicare.
Medicaid patients are required to bring their current Medical Assistance card reflecting coverage eligibility for the appointment date. If your plan requires a co-payment, it will be due at the time of service. If you do not have your card, we may not be able to verify your plan eligibility and you will be considered a self-pay patient.
We accept and bill commercial plans. Please familiarize yourself with your specific coverage to understand your payment obligation.
We offer a 20% prompt-pay discount to patients paying their estimated charges at the time of service. Our financial counselors will work with the patient and care provider to determine an estimate for the costs of the services provided for the visit. However, this is only an estimate and any remaining balance will be billed to the patient. We accept cash, personal checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Patients who are unable to meet the payment expectations outlined above may contact our office to discuss alternative arrangements (see Community Care program below). Please note that this discount does not apply to elective services including infertility treatment, dermatology and some others.
Managed Care Plans
University of Minnesota Physicians (UMPhysicians) participates in several primary care focused, managed care products. General pediatricians, general interns, family physicians and sometimes obstetricians/ gynecologists may be chosen as primary care physicians (specific physicians vary by plan). UMPhysicians subspecialty physicians may be seen under these plans with primary care physician authority. Contact your health plan representative to verify access to UMPhysicians primary care and specialty physicians.
