An estimated 81.1 million American adults (more than 1 in 3) have one or more types of heart disease. When the conditions for heart disease are diagnosed early enough to prescribe treatment and lifestyle changes, you can reduce your risk of a heart attack or other severe health problems.
University of Minnesota Physicians Heart offers a coronary calcium scan for a low $99 –a small price to pay for something that can actually help save yours or a loved one's life.
Because a coronary calcium scan is a screening examination, not all health insurance plan will cover the cost. Please check with your insurance provider to determine coverage.
Early detection is the key to prevention
A coronary calcium scan is one of the most advanced methods available today to assess your risk for a heart attack. Computed Tomography (CT), an advanced x-ray technique, coupled with Calcium Scoring software, allows our cardiologists and radiologists to view your heart and the surrounding arteries.
Our state of the art Dual-Source Flash scanners and 320 slice scanners are the most advanced scanners offered by any health system in the Twin Cities. These advance scanners allow thinner slices to be obtained in a shorter period of time, resulting in excellent detail and less radiation exposure.
The results of your exam can help you plan for your heart's future
The coronary calcium scan identifies the calcified plaque present in your coronary arteries. Calcified plaque, an indicator of coronary artery disease (CAD) and a leading cause of heart attacks, shows up several years before a heart attack or stroke hits. While other forms of plaque may exist, only calcified plaque is detected during a coronary calcium scoring.
Your coronary calcium scan will give you two very important pieces of information:
- The presence or absence of coronary calcium in your coronary arteries.
- The degree of the coronary calcium in your coronary arteries that determines your future risk of heart attack.
We encourage you to follow up with your doctor after your scan to discuss your test. They can review the results with you, and if necessary, recommend treatment or lifestyle modifications.
Check all that apply to you:
[ ] You smoke OR you live/work with someone who smokes daily.
[ ] You have a cholesterol level of 200 or higher.

If you are between the ages of 40-79 and checked more than two boxes, we encourage you to call for an appointment. A coronary calcium scan will help to more thoroughly assess your risk for a heart attack or heart disease.
