University of Minnesota Medical School Professor of Medicine and Cancer Center member
Peter Bitterman, M.D., has received the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2007 Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishment. The award was presented at the International Conference in San Francisco on Monday, May 21.
Bitterman received the award for his significant contributions to the understanding, prevention, and treatment of lung disease. Specifically, he was honored for his research to develop new treatments that promote lung repair and his efforts to find new targets for cancer therapy.
Bitterman graduated from Yale University Medical School in 1976. He completed his residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and a fellowship with the National Institutes of Health. He is currently associate director of the Medical School's M.D./Ph.D. program as well as professor in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine division.
Bitterman is an inaugural member of the newly formed Center for Lung Science and Health at the University of Minnesota, which is a center dedicated to interdisciplinary research, education, and public outreach activities that promote lung health and improve the care of patients with lung disease.
