U of M Develops Genetic Model for Leukemia Affecting Infants

Jul 07, 2006 - Long-Awaited Mouse Model Hailed as a Breakthrough Against Leukemia

Researchers at the University of Minnesota Cancer Center and Medical School have successfully produced the first mouse model with the rare gene of a frequently fatal form of blood cancer that most often strikes children from infancy to one year of age.

The team who conducted this five-year-long study was led by UMPhysicians Pediatric Oncologist Ashish Kumar, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Kumar and his colleagues believe this achievement will open the doors for further investigating the biology, developing new treatments, and possibly finding a cure for infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
