The University of Minnesota's Deborah E. Powell Center for Women's Health has been awarded $2.2 million over five years from the National Institutes of Health Office of Research on Women's Health to fund the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program. The BIRCWH award allows the center to support promising young faculty who want to devote their careers to women's health research. The University was one of ten universities selected to receive a BIRCWH grant in 2007. Thirty schools across the nation have BIRCWH grants.
"These funds will allow us to support the careers of the future national leaders in women's health research," said Nancy Raymond, M.D., director of the Powell Center and program director of the BIRCWH grant. "The award was given in recognition of the excellence of our research programs in women's health and our strong mentorship capability here at the University of Minnesota. It's a great achievement for the university to receive this prestigious, highly-competitive grant award and become part of this select group of universities."
The BIRCWH grant supports research career development of junior faculty members who have recently completed clinical training or postdoctoral fellowships. These faculty members are beginning their research careers studying issues relevant to women's health. The goal of the initiative is to promote research that will benefit the health of women in Minnesota and across the nation.
