Academic Title
Associate Professor, Vice Chairman, Director of Reconstructive Urology
Bio Statement
Dr. Sean Elliott is associate professor of urology and director of Reconstructive Urology at the University of Minnesota. He a fellowship-trained reconstructive urologist. His career is focused on improving patients' quality of life by rebuilding injured organs in the genitourinary system. His clinical practice includes reconstruction of urethral strictures, the injured ureter, urinary fistulas, male urinary incontinence, neurogenic bladder, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease and trapped or buried penis.
Elliott has performed more than 200 urethroplasties for urethral stricture disease and is one of the busiest implanters of devices to correct male incontinence in the U.S. He also manages challenging adverse effects of pelvic radiation including radiation cystitis, ureteral and urethral strictures.
Elliott’s research activities complement his clinical activities in that he is working to improve cancer survivorship by addressing the adverse effects of surgery and radiation to the urinary tract. He has completed a Master’s of Science in Health Services Research with a focus on Outcomes Research. He currently holds three nationally competitive research grants and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons. Elliot also is a participant in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Emerging Physician Leadership Program.

Grants
1) Research Scholar Grant, RSG-12-217-01–CPHPS
American Cancer Society
“Understanding the severe urinary adverse effects of pelvic radiotherapy”
This grant uses the SEER-Medicare database to better understand the severe urinary adverse effects of pelvic radiation such as urethral stricture, urinary fistula and hemorrhagic cystitis. We will describe their long-term incidence, compare risk factors and illustrate the burden of treatment for these events.
2) Medical Education and Research Association Grant
Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare
“Gentamycin bladder instillation”
This grant funds a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of nightly gentamycin bladder instillation for the prevention of urinary tract infection in adult Myelomeningocele patients with bladder augmentation.
