Screening and Diagnosis

Symptoms of Kidney disease include:

  • Blood in urine
  • High frequency of urination at night
  • Abdominal pain
  • Joint pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Nail abnormalities
  • Painful menstruation

People with known cases of PKD in their family should have genetic testing done to determine if they are at risk for carrying the gene.
Specific tests to screen for polycystic kidney disease include:

  • an abdominal MRI scan
  • an abdominal ultrasound
  • an abdominal CT scan
  • an intravenous pyelogram
