- Nationally recognized excellence in care
U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks us as one of the top urology centers in the country. Since 1930 University of Minnesota clinicians have been at the forefront of urologic clinical care, education and teaching, and we continue to lead innovative and pioneering efforts in a number of areas, including cancer, stones, infertility and pediatric urology.
- Institute for Prostate and Urologic Cancers
The first of its kind, the Institute encompasses a full range of medical services, treatments and research at one location, bringing together a team of world-class experts – including urologists, cancer specialists, radiation therapists and patient educators – to consult and collaborate on each patient’s needs. We give you non-biased, evidence-based information about all available treatment options.
- Kidney Cancer Program
Our urologic surgeons work in tandem with providers at the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota to treat people with kidney cancer. The center has been designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute, one of only 41 institutions in the United States to hold this designation and the only one in the Twin Cities area. With providers active in research and education, patients can come to expect the most up-to-date diagnostic techniques and treatment.
- Kidney Stone Program
Our unique care model puts all aspects of kidney stone care in one convenient location where patients can see up to three specialists at one appointment—a urologist, nephrologist and dietitian. For patients who are passing or who have passed kidney stones, the program offers follow-up care to assess any damage and develop a plan to prevent the reoccurrence of kidney stones. Among the treatment options for patients are dietary counseling, comprehensive metabolic evaluation and state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgery. Because we are skilled at multiple minimally invasive techniques, we can treat complex kidney stones. The kidney stone program will be held on Tuesdays at the Institute for Prostate and Urologic Cancers.
- Breakthrough treatment for prostate cancer.
UMPhysicians prostate cancer specialists are among the first in the nation to offer PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T), a recently approved drug to treat men with advanced metastatic prostate cancer. This new immunotherapy drug is made from the patient's own cells and works to boost the immune system to fight the cancer.
- Minimally invasive kidney and pelvic surgery for children.
UMPhysicians pediatric urology specialists were the first in the Upper Midwest to perform robotic assisted laparoscopic urologic surgery on a child. Dozens of children have benefited from this technology, which allows the youngest patients to have major kidney and pelvic reconstructive surgery through tiny incisions. They also enjoy a much more rapid recovery and return to activities.
